At Regent Vespa, our reputation is built upon the exceptional quality of our restorations, and we believe it’s important to provide our customers with a detailed understanding of the immense effort and precision that goes into restoring a scooter to its former glory. Below is a comprehensive breakdown of the restoration process that we follow, step by step:

Detailed Breakdown of the Restoration Process:

Initial Assessment:
The first step in our restoration process is to evaluate the scooter in its current, un-restored state. We check the engine to see if it’s free, and if it is, we start it up. Even if the scooter has seen better days, there’s something truly satisfying about hearing the engine run before beginning the restoration work.

Complete Disassembly:
The restoration process begins with a total disassembly of the scooter, meaning every part—every nut, bolt, and washer—is carefully removed. This stage requires utmost attention to detail, particularly in examining the steering column, as the majority of Lambretta scooters have experienced some form of impact over the years, with the steering area often bearing the brunt of this wear and tear. We assess the alignment and condition of the bearing cups in the frame, ensuring they are in perfect condition. The forks are also inspected for straightness and movement within the frame. Once this meticulous examination is complete, the steering cups are removed from the frame, an often overlooked step by others when conducting a "complete" restoration.

Frame Alignment and Powder Blasting:
After ensuring the integrity of the frame and steering components, we place the scooter in RLC's frame jig to check for alignment. This is crucial in ensuring the structural integrity of the scooter before proceeding further. Once confirmed, all bodywork is stripped and thoroughly degreased before being sent off for powder blasting. This step removes all contaminants and old paint, providing a clean surface for the next stages of the restoration.

Engine Disassembly and Restoration:
Vespa and Lambretta engines often suffer from years of neglect, minimal maintenance, and poor lubrication, leaving many engines in a condition where only the barrel and base engine casing can be salvaged. Once disassembled, the engine is meticulously cleaned, degreased, and inspected for any issues. We offer three types of engine finishes as part of our restoration:

  • Matt Grey (standard) Finish

  • Acid-Dipped Shiny Finish

  • Acid-Dipped and Mirror-Polished Finish (This option carries an additional cost.)

The acid-dipped finish is particularly popular due to its aesthetic appeal and the ease with which it can be cleaned in the future. We also offer acid-dipping services to customers who wish to have their own engines treated. Further details, including pricing, are available in the "Acid Dipping" section of our website.

Engine Build with Premium Components:
Once the engine casings are prepared, we begin the reassembly process. The engine is built to the customer’s exact specifications, though it is important to note that the variety of customizations is nearly limitless. However, all engines we restore are equipped with the highest quality components. We use only the best parts available, including IWIS or Regina chains, SKF, FAG, or RIV bearings, Rolf oil seals, and Borgo or Asso pistons. A few key steps that we ensure in every engine restoration—often overlooked by others—include:

  • Lightly machining the gasket faces and cylinder head face for a super tight seal.

  • Installing a new gear selector bush to ensure a precise gear change.

  • Using a proper metal-meshed halite washer on the drive side for optimal performance.

Additionally, we use NOS (New Old Stock) parts wherever possible, including original rear hub bearings, cranks, conrods, and carbs, all of which are sourced from our exclusive collection of NOS parts. These items are no longer available for outright sale and are used only in our restorations.

Suspension Rebuild:
A significant upgrade in our restorations is the use of original Lambretta suspension units. Unlike the remade suspension units available on the market, these original parts are rebuilt with all-new internals and restored to their original specifications. After rebuilding, the suspension units not only work perfectly but also offer a superior visual appeal. We ensure that the manufacturing dates stamped on the original units match the year of the scooter being restored, maintaining authenticity.

Reassembly and Final Checks:
After the engine and suspension units are rebuilt, the freshly powder-blasted and painted bodywork is carefully reassembled. The rebuilt engine is then fitted, along with any requested accessories. After the assembly is complete, the scooter undergoes rigorous testing. We run and ride the scooter for a minimum of 100 kilometers to ensure everything is in perfect working order, checking for any issues and making any necessary adjustments.

Delivery of the Completed Scooter:
Once all aspects of the restoration process are finished, and the scooter has passed our comprehensive checks, it is ready for delivery to you. We ensure that the scooter meets the highest standards of quality and performance before it reaches its new owner.

Why Choose Us?

One of the most common questions we receive is why our pricing is more competitive than other Vespa and Lambretta restorers, whose prices often hover around $9,000. The answer lies in our strategic location in Vietnam, where many of the spare parts for Vespa and Lambretta scooters are sourced. This allows us to take advantage of lower labor costs while maintaining the highest standards of quality. At Regent Vespa, we do not aim for excessive profit margins; instead, we charge a fair price for the quality of work we provide, ensuring that our customers receive excellent value for their investment.

We are proud to perform all restorations in-house, meaning that we have complete control over every aspect of the process, from parts sourcing to final assembly. Unlike other restorers who may send scooters elsewhere for restoration and mark up the prices for a quick profit, we handle every project ourselves, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and consistent quality. Our commitment to quality control, coupled with our dedication to preserving the authenticity of each scooter, is what sets us apart in the industry.

Conclusion

Choosing Regent Vespa means choosing a team of passionate and highly skilled professionals who are dedicated to bringing your classic scooter back to life. We combine years of experience, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality to deliver a product that not only meets but exceeds expectations. We take great pride in the work we do and are confident that our restorations will provide you with a scooter that offers both exceptional performance and lasting value.

Thank you for considering Regent Vespa for your restoration needs. We look forward to helping you restore your scooter to its full potential.
